What Medicare Covers for Rehab

Medicare covers substance use disorder treatment through both Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). Medicare Part A covers inpatient detox and rehabilitation at hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. Part B covers outpatient substance abuse treatment, including individual and group counseling, medication-assisted treatment, and screening and brief intervention services.

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital-based detox and rehab for up to 60 days per benefit period with a deductible (currently $1,632 in 2026) and no daily copay. Days 61–90 require a daily coinsurance. For standalone residential rehab facilities that are not classified as hospitals, Medicare coverage may be more limited.

Medicare Part B covers outpatient substance abuse counseling with no limit on the number of sessions when medically necessary. After meeting the annual Part B deductible ($240 in 2026), Medicare pays 80% of the approved amount and you pay 20% coinsurance. Medicare also covers annual alcohol misuse screenings at no cost as a preventive service.
